First Impressions: MAC Von Teese

I love Dita Von Teese, she is the epitome of glamour and the very definition of femininity.

Dita Von Teese is never seen without her absolutely gorgeous trademark crimson lips.  So it’s not surprising that her collaboration with MAC resulted in a lipstick that is one of the most perfect shade of red.

Von Teese is a warm tone red, described as a vivid tomato red, with a matte finish and is exclusively available online.

I found the texture to be creamy, smooth and glided on beautifully.  The gorgeously opaque coverage wore for well over 6 hours.

I am in love with this lipstick, and this will be my go to for all the holiday gatherings and parties this season.

First Impressions: Kat Von D Mi Vida Loca Remix Palette

The end of summer brings the arrival of the autumn and with it the season of holiday palettes.  The season begins with the release of Kat Von D’s Mi Vida Loca Remix eyeshadow palette.  The palette is designed to resemble a vinyl record and the sleeve features original artwork by Kat.

Inside the Mi Vida Loca palette you find 24 nicely pigmented shades of eyeshadows in a variety of finishes.  At first glance I really like the rich colours and was pleasantly surprised and pleased with how vibrant they were when I applied them to my dark skin without primer, for the most part.

Analogue - Burnt Orange
Fran - Deep Mustard Yellow
Legend - Golden Yellow
Vinyl - Neon Green
Misfit - Kelly Green
Lemmy - Grass Green

These colours applied well and had good colour payoff that blended nicely.  The exceptions being Legend and Vinyl, which were not as rich as the others, but could be good applied over a primer.

Love - Shimmering Rose
Swoon - Fuchsia
Destroyer - Bright Strawberry
Rewind - Aubergine
Harpsichord - Metallic Bronze

I really enjoy these colours, but I felt a little let down by how sheer Destroyer was, but it should work well over a primer.

Hyperballad - Sea Blue
Synth - Electric Blue
Dark Wave - Deep Navy
Echo - Purple glitter
Muse - Lilac Purple
Anthem - Purple

These blues and purples are really nice but the application was disappointing.  With the exception of Synth the colour payoff leaves something to be desidered when applied over bare skin.

Lyric - White Pearl
Black Metal - Matte Black
Skulls - Iridescent Pearl
Noble - Nude
Moulder - Butter Yellow
Vox - Chocolate Brown
Strutter - Taupe

I found the neutrals to be meh.  They are all really smooth and will wear well over primer, but they are not the best neutrals I’ve come across.

This limited edition palette is priced at $71 and is available exclusively at Sephora.ca

Colour Story - In Search of the Perfect Red

Queen Elizabeth I, Liz Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Naomi Campbell, Anne Hathaway, Taylor Swift, Diane Kruger, Lupita Nyong'o and Rihanna are women with at least one thing in common.  They have all rocked a fierce red lip.  Red lipstick is a classic that will always be on trend.

There are two parts to rocking a red lip.  The first is the physiological benefit.  The right red can make you feel powerful, adventurous, confident and unstoppable.  The second is red's ability to visually stimulate the minds of both the viewer and the one wearing it.  A killer red lip is the very definition of style and sophistication.

A perfect red lipstick is an essential part of every woman's make up bag.  So how does one find their perfect red?

How to find your perfect red

One thing to keep in mind when looking for your perfect red is that red is divided into two main families:

There is the cool family, with blue, mauve and berry tones.  An example of a perfect cool red lipstick would be Russian Red by MAC.

On the opposite side of the spectrum you find the warm family, featuring true reds along with orange, yellow and brown tones.  MAC's Lady Danger is a great example of a warm red lipstick.

Here are a couple tried and true methods that you can use to find your red;

Identify your undertones

You have one of the three following undertones: yellow (warm), pink (cool), or neutral.

Easy methods for finding your undertones
  • Veins:  Take a look at the veins on your wrists in natural light.  Blue veins indicate cool undertones, while green is an indication of warm under tones.  If you cannot tell, then you are neutral.
  • Jewelry:  If you find silver to be flattering against your skin, odds are you have cool undertones; gold, your undertones are warm.  They both work?  Then your undertones are neutral.

Now that you've found your undertones here are the reds that generally work best with those particular undertones.

  • Warm Undertones:  Tomato reds, orange reds, brown- and golden-based reds along with tawny reds.
  • Cool Undertones:  Pink tones, berry, blue and brick reds and plums.
  • True reds are great for all undertones

Skin tone

  • Fair Skin?  Look for berry or mauve tones, and try to avoid browns
  • Medium Skin?  Your reds are brown based and true reds
  • Olive Skin?  Reds with gold flecks, orange or yellow base and fire-engine reds are all you
  • Dark Skin?  Go bright.  Intense colour, such as deep reds and reds with blue undertones are your friends
The most important thing to remember when wearing red lipstick is to make sure that your lips are exfoliated and hydrated.

Even with all the guides and advice out there (and here) it is always best to take chances and experiment and have fun.  In truth, when it comes to makeup the "rules" are really just guidelines.  If you have warm undertones and a cool toned red catches your eye, go for it and do you!

So have you found your match?  What is it? Share in the comments.

Spring 2015: En Plein Air

It's Spring again!  This has been the coldest and longest winter ever.  But now  is the time of rebirth. Gardens begin to come alive and start showing off some amazingly beautiful colours.

En Plein Air is the title of Pantone's Spring 2015 colour report.  En plein air, is a French expression which means "in the open air" and is mainly used to describe the act of painting outside.  The colours for this season are cool and soft with subtle hints of warm tones, which follow a theme of en plein air taking cues from nature.

Aquamarine is a light airy blue with a calming feel.

Pantone
Scuba Blue a beautiful turquoise is invigorating and conveys a sense of excitement.
Pantone
Lucite Green is a soothing shade of mint green.

Pantone
Classic Blue inspires calm, confidence and harmony.

Pantone
Toasted Almond is a sun-tanned neutral, that offers comforting warmth and is reminiscent of a spontaneous spring, summer feeling.
Pantone
Strawberry Ice cooling and refreshing and is quite charming.
Pantone
Tangerine is a striking shade of orange that is an energizing but not jarring pop of colour.
Custard is a delicious and delectable yellow. Sweet and sunny, Custard is a cheering tone that brings thoughts of pleasant relaxation and comfort food.
Pantone
Marsala is 2015 colour of the year, and like the fortified wine that gives it its name, this compelling and cordial hue incorporates the satisfying richness of a tastefully fulfilling meal, while it's grounding red-brown roots point to a sophisticated, natural earthiness.
Pantone
Nature’s most perfect neutral, Glacier Gray is a shade that is timeless. Quietly assuring and peacefully relaxing, Glacier Gray is, above all, constant.
Dusk Blue is perennially a favorite shade for men.

Treetop is a natural and fertile green.
Woodbine is a tropical green that could best be described as nature’s neutral.
Sandstone is a rugged, woodsy and grounded shade, that is a complex neutral with a warming presence.
Titanium is a classic and tasteful gray shade that speaks to timelessness.
Lavender Herb is a shade that intrigues the eye.
